Helpful Reminders

I do love my work. As challenging as counseling can be, it really does ignite my passion. As a young man working towards my career, there was one by-product I never considered.

In my interactions with my clients,  I am constantly being served reminders. Professionally, this is known as countertransference. I see myself in my clients. I went through my fair share of trauma and bullshit that life has to offer. So it’s safe to say that I’d come face-to-face with these issues at some point.

I’ve been taking my own therapy seriously for the better part of a decade. That’s the part I didn’t expect to confront. I often find myself quoting my own therapists or self-disclosing situations that mirror that of my client’s.

It helps on multiple levels. For one, it allows me to offer valuable firsthand insight. Also, the conversations keep the ideas fresh and bring my past lessons back to the present. Almost like studying for the next test life is going to toss my way.

It’s always interesting to see where you might find these reminders. Don’t be afraid to bring attention to them.
