I feel like I have been having this conversation more this week both with my clients but also with myself. When stress rears its ugly head, usually we throw our physical well-being to the side first. Personally, it feels like the hardest area to be consistent with. I start craving sweets more as my comfort food. My energy levels go to shit, making it harder to move around. Or your mind races so much that your focus simply goes elsewhere.
For most of us, these habits seem mundane. We are told to do them day in and day out. It has to be part of your routine. Go to the gym 3-4 days a week 20-30 minutes a day. Keep yourself between 1,600 and 2,000 calories a day. See your family doctor every 6-12 months. So on. And so on.
However, without your body and your health, there is no way in hell you can carry out the other parts of your life. Those little things you do each day play a bigger part than we like to think. Think about the last time you felt sick. I mean even just an annoying cold. You were miserable. You probably didn’t want to talk to anyone. Maybe you felt exhausted and tired. Even the simplest task became cumbersome.
That’s just temporary illness too. Throw a chronic condition in the mix. Especially lifestyle-related ones (i.e. diabetes). You think you get inconvenienced by a cold. Wait until you can bend down because of chronic back pain. Or you are having a bad flare from your autoimmune disease. Everything else takes a back seat until it subsides. Yet, with those small daily habits, you can help maintain or even prevent these things from happening. One day builds off the last. With that momentum comes success. And with the success comes a happy and healthy you.
