The Right To Free Write

I’m going to do something on here that I haven’t in a long time. I am just going to free write. If you aren’t familiar with the idea of free writing, it is literally just to put down what comes to your mind. I have been slacking a bit on my blog posts (I’m one post behind for my new year’s resolution right now), and I am at a loss on what to write this week. That’s why I thought this might be a good idea to either at least start the post or maybe show how free writing can be a self-care tool.

I am a huge proponent of sometimes just getting things out of your mind through some form of expressive means. I have clients who write stories, journal, build, write music, and record podcasts. All of us use these as means to simply put out there what is on our minds. It can be powerful taking that ruminating thought out of its home and placing it somewhere externally. By doing so, you now give yourself the opportunity to view it objectively. You can look at it with an impartial view.

With that little flip of the switch, it takes the emotion out of it and pulls the legs right out from under the table (figuratively speaking). The once bothersome thought/feeling now has lost its power. It has been spoken into existence for the world to examine. It just is what it is. Nothing more, nothing less.

With that being said, I honestly had no clue what the hell I was going to type up this evening. However, I hope this little tidbit is helpful. Even if you don’t know where to start, pick somewhere and go for it. That’s what I did, and I was somehow able to make a comprehendible thought out of it.
